There are days when you feel that being a designer takes you as close a possible to the hearts and minds of an audience. That your work is breaking down barriers, or reshaping existing conceptions in thinking, feeling and motivation. Then there are days where you run into the work of the designers who came before you and realize that you have so much farther to go in refining your message and ability.
Born in 1931 George Lois and his iconic, sublime work was seen in every corner of mid 60’s to early 80’s popular culture. From the iconic Esquire Magazine covers to the “I want my MTV campaign.” No other living designer has done more to influence and inspire. Most designers claim Paul Rand or Massimo Vignelli as their firebrand inspiration. For our money George did more and said more than either.
Check out his work, life on his site. The Braniff ads (this one with Andy Warhol and Sonny Liston) are some of our favorites.
